Undeterred by the scorching 34-degree heat, today the participants in the uMkhanyakude District Indigenous Games delivered a spectacular display of energy, determination and cultural pride at KwaMsane Sports Complex on Saturday, 22 August 2026. Clad in vibrant municipal colours and fuelled by passion and zeal, athletes from across the district braved the blistering sun to proudly represent their municipalities in a true celebration of heritage and unity.
The games, held under the leadership of Mayor Cllr. Siphile Mdaka, brought together three local municipalities, Big Five Hlabisa, Inkosi Mtubatuba and Jozini. The event was supported by the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture and local municipalities.
Chairperson Mr. Gumbi said the primary objective is talent identification and progression from local to regional level, culminating in provincial, national and international competition to proudly raise the South African flag, while fostering social cohesion.
Selection for schools is strictly age-based, while community teams are selected on the basis of dedication and commitment. The games serve as a qualifier for the North/South Regionals, where uMkhanyakude will compete against King Cetshwayo and Zululand in nine codes, including Kho-Kho, Dibeke, stick fighting and Ingqathu.
