Today, the KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Health, MEC Nomagugu Simelane-Mngadi together with uMkhanyakude District Municipality mayor, Cllr Siphile Mdaka, conducted a joint oversight visit to Mosvold District Hospital to assess progress on the R312.9 million upgrade project.
The project addresses long-standing infrastructure backlogs at the 191-bed facility that serves 113 462 residents across 12 wards under Inkosi Mngomezulu, Nyawo and Mathenjwa, along the borders of Eswatini and Mozambique.
Currently, the hospital operates without a dedicated paediatric ward, with children accommodated in the former TB ward and without a mother's waiting lodge, forcing mothers to sleep in general wards alongside their children.
The R312.9 million investment will deliver 40 staff accommodation units, a 22-bed paediatric ward, an 18-bed mothers' lodge, conversion of the old paediatric ward into a modern nursery, and comprehensive upgrades to internal roads, water and sewer infrastructure. The project stands at 52% completion.
Following the inspection, the delegation proceeded to Dedefane Sports Ground for the Department's _Isibhedlela Kubantu – Taking the Hospital to the People_ outreach programme, held in commemoration of Women's Month.
The outreach provided cervical and breast cancer screening, antenatal and postnatal care, family planning, and HIV and TB services directly to rural women.
Mayor Mdaka said: "It is the duty of government to care for its citizens, especially women, who are the nurturers of families and the backbone of our communities. Through Isibhedlela Kubantu, and other Healthcare programmes, we restore dignity and bring healthcare to the doorstep of our people."
