The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Golden Games 2026 officially commenced yesterday, 16 September 2026, with a vibrant opening ceremony held at Tills Crescent Sports Grounds in Durban, eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality.
The games, organised by the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture in partnership with the Department of Social Development, bring together senior citizens from all 11 districts of KwaZulu-Natal to celebrate active ageing, healthy lifestyles, social inclusion and talent.
The opening ceremony marked the beginning of two days of spirited competition in various sporting codes including soccer, netball, athletics, and indigenous games. District teams will compete for provincial honours and an opportunity to represent KwaZulu-Natal at the National Golden Games.
Yesterday, uMkhanyakude District Municipality got off to a solid start in the Male Soccer category, playing to a hard-fought draw against Zululand District. The senior citizens displayed exceptional skill, discipline and sportsmanship – a true testament to the spirit of the Golden Games.
Today's programme will resume later than scheduled due to the heavy downpour experienced across the eThekwini Municipality this morning. Organisers are monitoring the weather conditions to ensure the safety and well-being of all participants.
