Today, 9th August 2026 uMkhanyakude District Municipality Mayor Cllr Siphile Mdaka, officiated at the opening and closing of the 10 km and 5 km marathon held in Mbazwana. The marathon was organised by Cllr Thabani Mngomezulu of Ward 03, uMhlabuyalingana Local Municipality, as part of a wellness initiative and Women’s Day celebrations.
Mayor Mdaka reaffirmed his commitment to continue supporting and participating in the marathon in the years ahead. As part of his support, he doubled the prize money and donated R10,000.00 to the Sodwana Athletics Club.
In addition, one of the young runners will receive sponsorship for running attire, including sneakers, tracksuits and other necessary sporting kits.
“We believe that sport is not only important for physical health, but also plays a significant role in fighting social ills such as drug abuse and crime, among other challenges,” said Mayor Mdaka.
The event highlighted the importance of sport, wellness and community participation, while encouraging young people, particularly women and youth, to embrace healthy and active lifestyles.
